From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

Today most of us are so busy working, socialising, and entertaining ourselves that we forget to look after ourselves! Bacteria and virus are in the environment everywhere, and we are constantly exposed to them. While we are busy our body is busy too. It’s always defending itself against these germs without our even noticing it.

When we fall sick, we complain. Most of us go to doctors, who have a pill for every ill. We rarely question whether these medicines really help. Medicines are chemicals too, that the body has to handle. They may be just one more load that the immune system has to bear.

A much better way would be to look after our bodies all the time, so that we rarely fall ill. We can do it by living and eating the way nature meant us to. The mantra is work less, shop less, go out in nature, enjoy simple pleasures and wholesome food!

Testimonial of Bhagwan Babur

From a person who would visit the doctor every two months, it’s been more than four years that Dubai based Bhagwan Babur hasn’t made his doctor’s appointment yet! Now at the age of seventy years he is enjoying a stronger immunity than ever since he shifted to the whole plant based diet.

I was diabetic and suffered from recurring colds, severe migraine and body aches, but that all is history now! Today I feel so energetic and have a sense of inner cheerfulness. Our food plays a big role and we only realise it once we change it.

My wife Lata and I were introduced to SHARAN four years ago. Since I love to go on holidays, we decided to sign up for the 21-Day Health Retreat. I must add that I have travelled the whole world but this was the best holiday ever, since we both stopped our medications of ten years! I was on diabetes medicines, blood thinners and B12 capsules and today I only take supplements for Vitamin D and B12. My wife had blood pressure and back aches, which have both disappeared. My colds are a thing of the past and climate change doesn’t affect me anymore. I have stopped snoring too, which is a big blessing for Lata. We both lost about 7 kilos each too!

Since I love eating salads and fruits, shifting to this diet has been a blessing. Earlier, being a diabetic, I would think twice before eating fruits, but I actually reversed my diabetes having mangos and bananas! I genuinely believe only people who are blessed understand this knowledge of eating right and I am truly grateful to Dr Nandita Shah and her team for the wonderful work they are doing.

Feta Cheese

Store-brought cheeses are packed with oils, sugars, cow’s blood, pus, excess sodium, chemicals, preservatives and cruelty. Give this super delicious feta cheese a shot…you will be pleasantly surprised!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole almonds

  •  1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

  • 1 clove garlic

  • 1 1/4 tsp rock salt/ sea salt

  • 1/2 cup cold water

  • 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves optional

  • 1 tbsp fresh rosemary leaves optional

Method:

Place the almonds in a bowl of room temperature water. Allow to soak for 8 hours.

Add some water and boil for 5-7 minutes. When cool remove skin. In a powerful blender puree almonds, lemon juice, salt, and water until very creamy. Place 3 layers of cheesecloth over a strainer and spoon the mixture into it. Bring up ends and tie with an elastic rubber band. Allow to drain in the refrigerator overnight or at least 8 hours.

Preheat oven to 200°F. Line a cookie sheet with a parchment paper. Turn the cheese with the crumbly side down onto the paper and shape it like a disc about ¾ inch thick. Bake for 40-50 minutes until top is firm and dry. Cool and chill.

When ready to serve place cheese on a plate and sprinkle dry or fresh herbs on it.

Immunity Boosters

The first step towards health is building up one’s immunity and luckily, it is super easy to do! Avoid foods that reduce immunity and eat everything that builds it up; it can’t get simpler than that! Your immune system is like an army against germs, and you need to feed the soldiers well in order for them to perform.

Although common belief is that animal proteins – meat and dairy  – are good for health, the opposite is true. Children who are brought up on a plant based diet fall sick much less and rarely get the usual colds and fevers that other children do. Packaged, processed, fried, sugary foods are immunity busters. Negative thinking and stress also work against our protection mechanism.

Nature has packed immunity boosters in all her offerings. If you eat right, your body is sure to be fortified to fight against any invaders.

Read this checklist to find out if you are on track!

1. Green Smoothies

Leafy greens give a boost of antioxidants and vitamins, ingredients that are so important in maintaining the immune system. Bananas and other fruits are nature’s perfect foods. And smoothies are so delicious too!

2. Go Organic

Chemicals are sprayed on foods to protect them from insects and other animals. They are harmful to us too and cannot be removed easily.

3. Eat Local & Seasonal

Nature knows when to grow what and where! Seasonal produce is freshest, and bursting with phytonutrients.

4. Eat a Rainbow Everyday

Most meals are varying shades of brown! Phytonutrients come in different colours and each one is important. Ensure that your meals are colourful and try to cover all the colours of the rainbow each day.

5. Listen to your Body

Nutrients are the spare parts for healing, and your body knows just what nutrients it needs, so don’t forget to listen to your cravings for certain fruits or vegetables.

6. Eat Home-cooked Meals

Foods cooked in most restaurants are not fresh and also use sauces that are full of preservatives. Foods that are freshly cooked contain the most nutrients.

7. Vitamin D

An extremely vital nutrient for our white blood cells that defend against bacteria, viruses or fungi. With pollution levels rising, we don’t get enough Vitamin D from sunlight, so make sure that you take suitable supplements if your levels are low.

8.  Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is required by every cell in the body. Since this vitamin is produced only by bacteria, it’s not uncommon to have shortages because of a super hygienic lifestyle. Alcohol and microwaves also destroy this vitamin. In today’s environment most people require a small dose of supplements lifelong.

9. Sleep Well

The maximum healing occurs when we rest. The most important hours for healing are between 10 PM and 4 AM, but you have to be sleeping. Sleeping early and getting up early is one of the best things you can do for your immunity.

10. Exercise

Yes! This is a must to build up the immune system.

11. Be Positive

Each thought has an impact on the cells of our body. Positive thoughts have a positive impact.
