The guilt and worry of having mangoes when I was diabetic has gone!
USA based Rajeev Sehgal was diagnosed with diabetes five years ago and dreaded the thought that he would be on medications all his life. But things changed…
I was diagnosed with diabetes 5 years ago and started with the smallest dose of metformin and over time, graduated to the highest dose plus another pill to keep my sugar level under control. In addition, I was put on a statin to keep my cholesterol below a certain level, even though my cholesterol was normal. The thought of taking meds for the rest of my life always bothered me but I didn’t see any other option.
Things worsened in 2018 as my work got even more stressful than normal. My A1C had gone up to almost 9. That sort of woke me up and I started exercising regularly and eating a little healthier. It took me over 6-8 months to get the reading to under 7 with the highest dose of metformin and another med. It again started bothering me that I would be on meds for the rest of my life.
I saw two documentaries – ‘Forks over Knives’ and ‘What the Health’ on Netflix. They started churning my brain again. So, I spoke with Shalu Nijhawan who is a certified holistic nutritionist and works with SHARAN. She told me how she helped her husband and had worked with a couple more people and had helped them reverse their diabetes.
She created a diet plan based on the things I like to eat. On 18th Jan I started this new whole food plant based diet totally devoid of animal products, processed foods and oil of any kind. I even learnt to cook without any oil at all and drink green smoothies for breakfast. I totally gave up tea, eggs and diet soda – my favourites.
It was challenging at first but the motivation of reversing diabetes kept me going. I started seeing a difference pretty quickly and Shalu guided me in reducing my medicine dose gradually and on 5th of February I stopped my medicine totally.
Now it has been over 3 months that I am medicine free and my diabetes is gone. I had my last official blood work done in early March and my A1C was 5.8. Overall, my blood report was almost perfect! In addition to this, I am enjoying my mangoes and have lost 22 lbs and reduced 4 pant sizes. Thanks to Shalu for educating me on the benefits of plant based diet and guiding me through this process.
