SPRING DETOX: Re-invigorate yourself!

Spring is finally here! With the beginning of the lunar year, it brings the joy of brighter days and a renewed outlook on life. In nature, spring is synonymous with rebirth, new leaves, new seeds, this is the time when nature is at its most bountiful, with lush greenery and fresh flowers blooming everywhere, birds chirping, one may say they all have a ‘spring’ in their step!

For us living in the northern hemisphere, this is the time when we clean our houses of all the winter things and prepare for a fresh beginning, but in the process we often forget that our first home is our body and we must clean it as well so we can truly feel healthy and energized!

We often let go of ourselves during the winter months, we feel less energy, tend to put on some weight, and skin becomes dry and dull, overall not feeling our best. So when springtime comes, it is finally time to take our New Year resolutions seriously and do something to feel healthier!

Seasonal changes

Our ancient sages who practiced Ayurveda spoke about the process of ‘Ritucharya’ the annual spring detox. They divided the year into seasons according to the qualities that they reflect. Spring is the Kapha season, therefore the change is season also demanded a change in food habits that reflect the needs of the body during this time. We eat a lot of heavy foods during the winter which leads to an accumulation of toxins in the cells of our bodies. But since the season supports it, it is difficult to realize until spring when the season changes. Our bodies are less able to cope with the congested toxins and hence lead to a lot of seasonal allergies during spring time. This is why it is most beneficial to cleanse our bodies at the onset of spring, so we can begin the year with a healthy body and mind.

SIGNS OF TOXIN CONGESTION

There are many ways to know if we are ready for a detox. Symptoms like common cold and cough, flu, allergies, stomach issues and indigestion, headaches, eye soreness, fatigue, unexplained muscle pain, drowsiness ad sluggishness during the day, loss in appetite, etc. You may even feel less energetic, loss in radiance of skin, increase in oiliness and dullness, loss of shine in hair, you may have adult acne, and dry patches on your face and body.

IMPORTANCE OF SPRING DETOX

We don’t pay heed to the symptoms when they appear but these often snowball into bigger issues due to lack of attention and care at the right time. Ailments such as chronic fatigue, autoimmune conditions, food intolerances, asthma etc.

This is the season where nature refreshes itself. When we also start following the cycle of nature, our bodies automatically become healthier and more attuned to its natural state. It is the best time for a detox. Therefore, along with our houses, we let us also rid our bodies of unwanted toxins and help our bodies function in their most optimum level, so we can be reinvigorated with health.
