From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

Since a young age we have been conditioned to take medicines each time we don't feel well. For a headache, we pop a painkiller. For fever, we reach out to another pill. These are short-term measures that address the symptoms of the problem and don’t really get rid of the problem itself. With lifestyle diseases, this is even more obvious. For instance, you can stop sugar or carbohydrates all you want, and yet not get rid of diabetes. People take medicines through their entire lives just to control the symptoms. Medicines never cure. That's why, we at SHARAN, always work at the level of cause.

It's the same for the coronavirus. Since this virus spreads quickly through the air and touch, it's important to contain it as much as possible by avoiding large gatherings, unnecessary travel, and quarantines for those who may have been in contact with the victims. We all should do as much as we can to improve our immunity and stay away from contact.

At the same time, realistically, the coronavirus is unlikely to go away. Unlike bacteria, viruses cannot be killed by antibiotics. We need to realise the cause of the coronavirus and work at that level in order to get rid of this. We have had several wake up calls in the form of MERS & SARS. The Covid-19 is even more efficient in spreading. Can we all get together to secure our collective future?

A healthy Bharat, a disease-free India and healthy, happy Indians everywhere in the world is what we truly deserve. In association with LiveMast, we at SHARAN have initiated a satyagraha plea to our Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modiji  to go 100% plant based in 2020! Corona is just a symptom of our times

Just as a coronavirus wreaks havoc on our body, we can view the human being as a virus that wreaks havoc on mother Earth. No other animal is as destructive to our planet as our species is.

Our body always works to heal itself. Similarly mother Earth also works to heal herself. Perhaps the coronavirus is just a symptom, the beginning of a severe disease afflicting our mother Earth. What can we do about it now? Here are the issues that we need to tackle long term in order to survive in the age of coronavirus.

1.  Lack of biodiversity

Because of our increasing population, we are hardly leaving any habitat for other species. Extinction is happening at an alarming rate. Yet, both the planet and we depend on biodiversity to survive.

2. Population density

It is vital to curb our population growth. When one species multiplies out of proportion, it also gives an opportunity for infections that affect that species to multiply out of proportion since the host is everywhere. Population density also creates problems such as food and water shortage.

3. Eating animals

Although our digestive system is suitable for a herbivorous diet, we have been conditioned to believe that we are omnivores. And now we are eating more animals and their secretions than ever before. The animals raised for food are more numerous than our own species and an even bigger threat to biodiversity. The coronavirus epidemic actually started from a wild animal market in Wuhan. May this be a wake-up call for all of us to go vegan.

4. Commercialisation

As a commercialistic society, we often forget to focus on what we need in order to survive rather than what we want. As Mahatma Gandhi rightly said, “The earth has enough for everyone's need but not everyone’s greed.” Our greed for more and better has resulted in larger cities, larger roads, more travel, larger gatherings, and more waste. These conditions help the virus to spread.

5. Pollution

A direct result of commercialisation and greed, we use and pollute areas without waste by drilling or oil, and by industrialisation. We live amidst pollution, which impacts our health. The coronavirus affects the lungs, so it might help to stop smoking. It’s unfortunate that so many of us live in areas where the air we breathe is worse than chain-smoking!
