From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

Our amazing body is always working to heal and we have been gifted with so many reserves. We have two kidneys, we could do with one; two lungs, we could do with one. We have a large liver and can survive even if a large part of it is damaged. Until our arteries are 70% blocked, we have no problems! We have been gifted with two eyes, two ears, two arms and legs too!

With our modern lifestyles we often manage to go beyond all our reserves and get sick! And that’s when we sometimes begin to appreciate how great it feels to be well! What is life without perfect health to experience its wonders? Indeed health is the only life insurance!

Myriam, a homeopath, shares how the whole plant based diet reversed her cancer and a metabolic syndrome too!

As a classical homeopath for 15 years and teacher of homeopathy to medical physicians at the Sharei Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem, I understood that symptoms are the language that our body speaks to help us create change in our lives and adopt new tactics to maximize our health.

Diagnosed with bone cancer at age 39, I refused intrusive interventions, choosing minimal surgery and holistic approaches instead. I am very grateful to have been cured and to be alive today.

At age 52, I was diagnosed with the onset of metabolic syndrome. I decided to do everything possible to avoid the medications that were pushed on me by the concerned medical staff after bad blood test results. I turned to a whole food plant based diet.

It was clear to me that my energy, every cell in my body, every blood vessel, my thoughts as well as my connection to the world around me would be affected by the products that I chose to ingest to nourish myself. I had been so careful to protect myself from violence, stressful situations, enmity, but I kept swallowing products that were detrimental to my health and well-being.

I wanted to learn as much as I could to help myself and others now! I turned to Dr. Nandita Shah, a medical doctor and nutritionist living in India, and the founder of SHARAN India. I attended Peas vs Pills and  I sat in Dr. Shah’s clinic for 3 months, followed a course in the University of California, in San Francisco in the Prevention of Chronic Disease through Nutrition. I completely reversed my own symptoms, lost 13 kg without dieting and set on my way to inspire others to follow the same path to vibrant health.

I am now also a graduate of the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies with a certificate in Plant Based Nutrition from Cornell University. I practice as a Whole Food Plant-based Nutrition specialist, with my own organisation, The Healthy Kitchen Initiative, teaching people new food strategies to take care of the onslaught of deteriorating health and in most cases reverse their symptoms entirely. It is possible to live at optimal health, with youthful energy, compassionate love in the heart and minimal impact on the planet. – Myriam

Our Window to Our World – Eyes

In earlier times, people would only have reading glasses, due to age. Today it is fairly common to see children and most adults wearing spectacles! Optical shops and week long appointments at opthamologists are a testimony of that.

According to the World Health Organisation, 39 million people are blind and about 6 times that many have poor vision! In fact in India, nearly half of all Indians are in need of vision correction! And did you know that 80% of vision problems world-wide are avoidable or even curable?

With screens surrounding us, coupled with poor nutrition, eye-care is something which we cannot afford to allow to take a back-seat.

A check-list to eye-care…

1.  Vitamin C rich fruits and vegetables, like dark leafy greens, bell peppers, citrus fruits, brocolli, papaya and tomatoes all best had raw, help support blood vessels in the eye.

2. Peanuts are a good source of vitamin E, a nutrient known for protecting eyes from free radical damage.

3. Nuts such as almonds and pistachios, which have vitamin E can boost your eye health.

4. Sunflower seeds help to keep your eyes healthy and disease free.

5. Exercise improves blood circulation, which improves oxygen levels to the eyes and the removal of toxins.

6. Blink every 30 seconds

7. When you are working on a computer, every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

8. Smoking exposes your eyes to high levels of oxidative stress.

9. Donot read in a moving car

10. Remove your eye-make up before sleeping as it causes irritation.
