ABOUT US HEALTH PROGRAMMES RECIPES RESOURCES

From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

This is the hottest time of the year in most parts of India. The vegetation is dry and the heat can be unbearable. Water shortage also adds to the misery. And yet, this is the time when we get wonderful gifts of nature in the form of fruits. Where I live in Auroville, this is the very best season for jackfruit, chickoos, soursop and the king of fruits – mangoes. (Of course papaya, bananas and pineapple are available all year round). And the watermelon season is just getting over. Each of these fruits comes in a number of varieties that makes shopping so difficult because you don’t know what to pick and choose. But it makes dinner so easy because there is really no need to cook. Nature is so wonderful in her generosity.

Last night I had 2 varieties of jackfruit as an appetiser followed by 3 luscious mangoes of different varieties. My dessert was 2 chickoos. Yum, totally filling and satisfying. I’m so grateful to live close to nature and all her bounty.

The guilt and worry of having mangoes when I was diabetic has gone!

USA based Rajeev Sehgal was diagnosed with diabetes five years ago and dreaded the thought that he would be on medications all his life. But things changed…

I was diagnosed with diabetes 5 years ago and started with the smallest dose of metformin and over time, graduated to the highest dose plus another pill to keep my sugar level under control. In addition, I was put on a statin to keep my cholesterol below a certain level, even though my cholesterol was normal. The thought of taking meds for the rest of my life always bothered me but I didn’t see any other option.

Things worsened in 2018 as my work got even more stressful than normal. My A1C had gone up to almost 9. That sort of woke me up and I started exercising regularly and eating a little healthier. It took me over 6-8 months to get the reading to under 7 with the highest dose of metformin and another med. It again started bothering me that I would be on meds for the rest of my life.

I saw two documentaries – ‘Forks over Knives’ and ‘What the Health’ on Netflix. They started churning my brain again. So, I spoke with Shalu Nijhawan who is a certified holistic nutritionist and works with SHARAN. She told me how she helped her husband and had worked with a couple more people and had helped them reverse their diabetes.

She created a diet plan based on the things I like to eat. On 18th Jan I started this new whole food plant based diet totally devoid of animal products, processed foods and oil of any kind. I even learnt to cook without any oil at all and drink green smoothies for breakfast. I totally gave up tea, eggs and diet soda – my favourites.

It was challenging at first but the motivation of reversing diabetes kept me going. I started seeing a difference pretty quickly and Shalu guided me in reducing my medicine dose gradually and on 5th of February I stopped my medicine totally.

Now it has been over 3 months that I am medicine free and my diabetes is gone. I had my last official blood work done in early March and my A1C was 5.8. Overall, my blood report was almost perfect! In addition to this, I am enjoying my mangoes and have lost 22 lbs and reduced 4 pant sizes. Thanks to Shalu for educating me on the benefits of plant based diet and guiding me through this process.

Mangoes and Fruits are for Everyone!

If you think about it, fruit is the very best food for our species because it’s instinctively the most attractive in nature. Yet many people hesitate to enjoy it fully.

Mangoes and all fruits are beneficial because they:

1. Alkalize the whole body

Fruits are the most alkaline of all foods. Our body is alkaline and eating alkaline foods helps maintain that.

2. Lower cholesterol

Like all plants, there is no cholesterol in fruit. Fruits contain high levels of fibre and Vitamin C which help lower the bad cholesterol.

3. Great for people with diabetes

Most diabetics believe that fruit should be had after much consideration because it can raise the blood sugars, but that’s not true if you are following the SHARAN lifestyle! In fact, if you have only fruits and green smoothies your blood sugars will come tumbling down. The main cause of diabetes is fat without fibre (oil, ghee, butter and all other animal products). Make sure that you have fruits and not fruit-juice! Enjoy the mango season.

4. Ease constipation and digestive ailments.

Fruits are fibre-rich, easy to digest and prevent constipation.

5. Help in kidney disease

Many people with kidney disease are told to avoid fruit because it raises the potassium. With SHARAN lifestyle we use nutrients to heal and fruits are full of nutrients, antioxidants, phytonutrients and vitamins. So please don’t miss that green smoothie. Bananas are fine, and so are greens and mangoes!

6. Help people with cancer.

After all the chemotherapy, when you don’t feel like eating anything else, chilled fruit comes to the rescue. Nutrients and calories packed hygienically in its own biodegradable skin. The perfect fast food for those difficult days.

7. Good for the heart too

The fibre, potassium and vitamin content in fruit help to ward off heart disease. Anti-oxidants help the blood flow.

8. Convenient as snacks and while travelling

You have access to health almost anywhere if your snacks and meals are fruit.

9. Fabulous for weightwatchers

You can eat all the fruit you like and yet keep your weight down if you follow the SHARAN lifestyle. So enjoy the mangoes!
