From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

Truly this was an unforgettable year, and Covid-19 has been an amazing teacher. This tiny virus taught us that we are all connected, and only if we work as a team can we protect each other from the consequences of the pandemic. Covid-19 can be deadly if one suffers from co-morbidities, but otherwise most patients were able to recover without any effects. We also learnt that if the government wants, it can control the problem, through lockdowns, masks, hand sanitisers, and social distancing.

Most of the co-morbidities that make Covid-19 deadly like diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, asthma, upper respiratory tract infections, cancers, autoimmune diseases, chronic kidney disease etc can be prevented and reversed through SHARAN lifestyle. If there was as much emphasis on controlling the spread of these chronic lifestyle diseases as there is on controlling the spread of Covid-19 we would all be healthier.

When the lockdown hit, Team SHARAN rose to the occasion in true team spirit, and put some amazing courses online. Our quality enhancement team and facilitators worked hard and everyone learnt so much. Our participants were now at an advantage because they were working from home. They got to attend many of our programs, see amazing testimonials, and learn to take even better charge of their health. It was a blessing in disguise. May we all take charge of our health in the New Year, whether the government enforces this or not.

To help you reach your health resolutions, we have decided to extend our 50% discounts to all our four ongoing online courses – Reversing Diabetes in 21 Days, The Whole Food Plant Based Cooking Course (English & Hindi) & The Six Weeks to Health Gain & Weight Loss. Let’s build a culture of health together.

Diamond merchant Ashwin Pandiya’s health turn-around helped him find his passion!

They say passion is not something that you know but something that you have been ignoring all along. I have always been passionate about my work but what I kept ignoring in the process was my health.

This resulted in me having a number of health-related problems including high blood pressure, skin issues, and a number of acute diseases. I was in dire need of a solution and a simple Facebook post led me to reconnect with my Guru, who suggested that I shift to a raw diet. Not knowing how this was going to help, I decided to stop doubting and followed a strict raw diet for 3 months. What I felt after that was nothing short of a miracle. I felt rejuvenated, was energetic all the time, my mind was clear, I felt like a burden had been lifted and I was able to stop my high blood pressure medicines. All my health issues seemed to have vanished.

My new-found knowledge led me in search of organic food and I ended up meeting Capt. Pinto of SHARAN, who eventually helped me realize the passion that I had always been ignoring. Understanding the aspects of whole plant-based food, veganism and organic farming eventually led me to my life’s purpose. I wanted to help people reconnect with nature, spread awareness about holistic health and help organic farmers flourish and this became the reason for starting the SHARAN Organic Store’s South Mumbai branch. Most of us have forgotten how it feels like to be one with nature. My advice to everyone would be to experience that reconnection.

Banana Cake with Nuts

Find us someone who doesn’t love something sweet. Well enjoy this delicious and super easy to make cake and do let us know how it tasted!

  • 1 cup dry apricots (put them in water 1 hour before)
  • 1/2 cup seeded dates
  • fruits 4-5 – kiwi, pineapple/mangoes, strawberry
  • 2 bananas
  • 1/2 cup tahini (sesame paste)
  • 1 cup grated fresh coconut

Method

In blender, blend the nuts, dry fruits and the dates.

In a cake pan, spread the nuts and dry fruits mixture and firmly press down. If it is too dry add some coconut milk. Make a cream from the bananas and tahini.

Happy 2020?

While March of this year caused confusion, chaos and concern, we at SHARAN picked up the pace soon as health concerns were literally in the air. An interest in one’s well-being piqued for most. People had time to listen, to take care of themselves. We could reach out to people all across the world. Suddenly addressing someone in Sydney or Dehradun was possible at one click!

So what was 2020 like at SHARAN? Here is a list of our acheivements.

1. Our ONLINE presence multiplied!

While we managed to conduct 121 physical events in India pre-lockdown, post lock-down, we conducted over 400 events virtually reaching all over the world. This was our first in conducting cooking classes, talks, training programs and workshops all online, thanks to Zoom!

2. Discounts & Freebies

Considering the fact that most people were facing work and income issues, we decided to offer all our pre-recorded online programs at 50% off. Also Health Week, Saturdays & Sundays with SHARAN, healthy hacks, immunity boosting series, eye-care series, growing your microgreens, making personal care products at home, all about bio-enzymes were conducted for free. We also gave away a number of cooking classes as prizes!

3. Our Hindi presence widened

We launched our Whole Plant-Based Basics Cooking Online Certificate course in Hindi, our Hindi YouTube channel, conducted several free talks and programs in Hindi.

4. Six Weeks to Health Gain & Weight Loss Online

This popular program which was a hit in Mumbai was made into an online program and launched this year. It took us over a year and a half to plan and execute this program and the results have been worth it.

5. The Salad Revolution

Our signature program, along with the Seven Day Salad Challenge, lasted seven months and was highly appreciated. Many celebrities joined in to help us spread the word to build a culture of health. Most importantly it contributed to a positive health shift for so many.

6. Module on Plant Based Nutrition for colleges

Several members of our team got together to conduct a week long module for the 3rd year Food Technology students of the Vigyan University in Andhra Pradesh. This was so much appreciated that they invited us to speak at their Conference, “Science Technology and Innovation for a Sustainable Food System – 2020” on 15th -16th Dec 2020.

7. SHARAN Organic Store at South Mumbai

Our second branch opened at Kemps Corner this year. It also has a delivery service.

8. WhatsApp series

This year we conducted many more WhatsApp series where people would get a recipe a day on WhatsApp. The most popular ones were the Raw Recipes and Around the World in 30 Plates!

9. The Ultimate Health Quiz

On August 15th, we launched the Quit Disease Movement by conducting a talk and a quiz where our participants won exciting prizes including an oven, a blender, a Royal Prestige dinner set and more!

10. International Speakers

Thanks to Zoom, we could have Dr Neal Barnard from PCRM join us for a talk on immunity and hormonal balance. We also had Dr Vinod Gauba from Dubai speak on eye-care as that was much needed in these times. We had Rohit Hingoorani join us from Canada to speak on veganism too.
