From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

Detox is a buzzword these days, especially in times like this when everyone knows that our health is the best insurance. Our body heals best when it has nothing else to do. That’s why, when we are unwell we don’t have an appetite. It’s our body telling us not to eat so that it has more time to heal. This is why fasting is a great way to detox. Fasting can even result in a process called autophagy, where the body ingests its own diseased cells. This can be particularly useful in cancers. Being on a fast can also shift the state of mind which can be a beneficial side effect.

Fasting may not be a viable option for many to do consistently, but we can all keep our bodies detoxed at all times by eating only high quality, nutrient dense foods. The higher the quality of the food, the less you need to eat. When we eat whole organic foods in their raw form, our appetite naturally decreases and our energy levels naturally increase. A whole plant based diet contains fibre which does wonders to keep the body clean. Fibre acts like a broom in the digestive tract. It also helps keep the blood thin and helps clean out clogged blood vessels.

I know many people who go to special detox centres and they come out feeling so much better that they decide to go there once every year. Rather than an annual detox, why not permanently fuel your body as if it’s your most valuable vehicle? It truly is.

I’m a new person thanks to detox

Sweccha Jain suffered from a rare autoimmune disease and shares how a detox helped her reclaim her health and happiness.

SHARAN actually came to my rescue when I was going through a severe health condition. I did the detox program with Madhura Vayal  for the first time in September 2019 and I absolutely loved it! It helped me understand the importance of detox and how to eat mindfully. It also helped  me to be more aware of what I am eating and why I am eating.

I suffered from a rare autoimmune disease called Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis and would have abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. I used to be bed ridden for days together and had to pop 12-14 pills a day. The SHARAN diet and the detox program completely healed me of these symptoms and today I don’t take any pill for this condition!

So when I got the opportunity to do the detox program the second time, I just jumped for it. In fact, I learnt so much more even the second time. I understood how detox should be a way of life, and that we should follow it every single day of our life. The program was just amazing. Madhura and all the participants were also very supportive and encouraging. I strongly believe that each one of us should do this program every month with her till it’s deep rooted within us and till we make it a way of life.

My deepest gratitude to Madhura, Dr Nandita and to the entire SHARAN team for showing us the path to healing and happy living.

Detox Do’s

Most of us are concerned about the hygiene of our bodies, homes, environment etc. But do we really think about internal cleansing? Have you ever considered how to cleanse your organs internally? How to get rid of impurities of the mind?

That’s exactly what detox is all about – Cleansing internally. Simply by going on a whole plant based diet, the detoxification process begins. That’s why unexplained headaches, back-aches etc disappear, as we start eating the right way. Slowly and steadily, the body feels happy, and it shows on your hair and skin, as it glows. Energy levels rise and mental clarity is experienced.

Check out if you are on the detoxification path, with the 9 Detox do’s…

1. Green Smoothies

A green smoothie for breakfast or an evening snack is ideal! Green leaves and fruits (frozen – add to the taste) blended with water, is a very effective and delicious detox.

2. Go Organic

Chemicals – pesticides in fresh produce and preservatives in packaged foods are hormone disruptors, and we want to get rid of the toxins!

3. Go Vegan

Meat and Dairy contain fat and cholesterol that clog our veins and truly need to be wiped out.

4. Herbal teas

If something warm is what you seek, then make natural teas or infusions. Use any flavours that call out to you – lemon grass, turmeric, ginger, tulsi, cinnamon, cloves etc or a mixture to get amazing infusions.

5. Sweat it out

Did you know that when you exercise and you begin sweating, toxins release from your body and you begin cleansing!

6. Add fibre into your diet

Have organic fruits and raw vegetables as whole (with their peels on wherever possible), as this helps release the waste accumulated in your digestive track.

7. Fasting

Go raw for a day or two in a week. This gives the body a rest, and it has time to recuperate and rejuvenate.

8. Join a spiritual class

Our mind also needs to get rid of impurities; for a healthy mind, ensures a healthy body.

9. Listen to your body

Drink when you are thirsty and eat when you are hungry. Don’t eat because food is there, or it is time to eat!
