60-year-old Prema Denduluri shares how she coped during the pandemic, when everyone around her was falling sick.
I was diabetic for 18 years. Two years ago, I attended Dr Nandita’s Reversing Diabetes and Hypertension workshop. In no time, I made the shift and over a period of time with the help of consultations, I even stopped my medicines for both diabetes and blood pressure . My joy knew no bounds! I lost 10 kgs and my leg cramps just vanished. Today, I feel young and energetic like a 30-year- old and have also become very calm and tolerant.
In 2020, I visited the US to help with the delivery of my fourth grandchild. We decided to have a small intimate baby shower with just 9 adults and 5 children. This was the peak time for Covid in the USA. After two days, all the adults except me started having symptoms of Covid and tested positive. I totally attribute myself not getting Covid because of the diet and the lifestyle changes I had consciously made. I could really breeze through all my responsibilities without getting tired. In fact I helped get them all back to normal health by giving them raw vegetables and fruits, smoothies, soups, and whole grains. My friends and relatives are really amazed at my transformation. And my entire family has been inspired by this lifestyle.
Even in the current situation, I am doing totally fine. I strongly believe that going whole-food plant-based is the best way to build ones immunity.

Sweet Corn Salad
Raw is a great immunity booster, so add in salads regularly to your lunch and dinner. Try this simple salad which is sure to make you smile as you say Yum!
Ingredients
- 2 cups sweet corn kernels, steamed until tender
- ½ cup diced carrots, steamed until tender
- ½ cup diced cucumber
- ¼ cup diced tomatoes
- Lemon juice to taste
- Unrefined salt to taste
- 2 large lettuce leaves to serve
Method
Mix all the ingredients together and serve on a bed of lettuce.

Why does it keep happening?
Whether we like it or not, the pandemic may force us to change our ways. It would be best to change in a way that helps us survive as a species taking into account chronic diseases and climate change since these are all connected.
1. Eating animals
Although we love to call ourselves omnivores by saying we have been eating animal products for centuries; the truth is that our bodies have not adapted to it. Most people are lactose intolerant and excess protein causes cancers and chronic kidney disease. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the World Watch Institute, animal agriculture is also the leading cause of climate change. And most pandemics including this one started with animals in our food chain. What we can do: reduce animal product consumption.

2. Population Density
As our population grows, we are closer to each other than ever before in history. At a population of almost 8 billion our cities are bursting – a way for pandemics to easily spread. Animal agriculture has seen pandemics too – bird flu, swine flu, foot and mouth disease are recent examples. Population density also contributes to climate change. It would be best for us and the future generations that we voluntarily reduce population growth. What we can do: support population reduction by having fewer children, opting for adoptions, choosing to be child free.

3. Commercialisation
In general, it’s big pharmaceutical companies that are benefitting from the pandemic, not patients or the environment. Our experience has shown that knowledge, rather than medicines is more helpful in overcoming both acute diseases like covid and chronic diseases. Our human quest for more and better is fueling both commercialism and climate change. What we can do: heal naturally, practice minimalism, and support small ethical businesses.

4. Deforestation
Nature exists in balance. Our encroachment into the forests, results in less habitat for wildlife. The imbalance is causing disease and climate change. The closer we come to wildlife the more chances of viruses jumping species too. Our quest for bigger, better and several homes is fueling deforestation. What we can do: respect nature’s balance, practice minimalism.

5. Pollution
Pollution of natural resources like air, water and land results in both disease and climate change. Chemicals and plastics are suffocating our planet. We are now breathing and eating plastic pollution. This decreases immunity and causes cancers. What we can do: minimize the use of plastic, at least single use plastics. Avoid the disposable culture.

6. Globalisation
We want access to everything. Everything is now available everywhere. We have forgotten the pleasure of local and seasonal. We travel far for pleasure when there are beautiful places to visit nearby. We are always looking for something else. What we can do: travel inwards to seek true happiness.
