ABOUT US HEALTH PROGRAMMES RECIPES RESOURCES

From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

When I was young, I would wake up every morning with a sense of fear and anxiety which gradually diminished as the day progressed. After I turned vegan, this early morning distress vanished. I did not realise the change till I inadvertently had some non-vegan mayonnaise one day. To my surprise I found that I woke up the next day with the same anxiety as earlier. This recurred for at least ten days before it finally disappeared.

Eating foods that contain the fear and anxiety of the animals that are in our food chain brings us similar feelings as theirs. I realised this fear is transmitted through the hormone adrenaline in these foods. I had got rid of my anxiety when I stopped consuming animal foods. To check if my clients also experienced the same changes, I started observing them more closely in this regard. They too found a huge shift in their state of mind by just changing what they put in their mouths.

Today human beings are eating more animal products than ever before. We are also suffering from more mental health issues than ever before. Is there a connection?

Do you also have unexplained anxiety attacks? Try removing animal products, including dairy and meat, from your diet. Eat only plant-based for a few weeks. Then, check if you are experiencing more clarity, confidence and calm. You may never want to go back to eating animal products!

For the first time ever, we bring you a residential cooking retreat – Cook to Heal! Make new friends, learn interesting cooking techniques and more in the lap of nature. For details click here

Ensure Your Mental Well-being

Just as one should not wait for disease to get back to health, one needn’t wait for symptoms to work on one’s mental health.

Discover 6 ways to improve and maintain your mental wellness

1. Right diet

A sense of clarity and calmness prevails when one goes on a whole food plant-based diet.

2. Exercise

Physical exercise helps one’s brain stay sharp. It increases oxygen to the brain and reduces stress hormones.

3. Mental stimulation

The more you exercise your brain, the better you will be in processing and remembering information. Take up a hobby or course, read, do crosswords or sudoku, play chess, paint, do gardening, etc.

4. Stress management

Be realistic and practical. Express your feelings instead of bottling them up. Take breaks throughout the day and set a healthy balance between work and leisure. Focus on one task at a time, rather than multi-tasking. Attend a spiritual or philosophy class which helps you understand life in a broader perspective.

5. Quality sleep

Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep every night. Otherwise memory, creativity, problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills get affected. The best thing to do is to have a regular sleep schedule and avoid all screens for at least an hour before bed.

6. Stay socially engaged

Human beings are highly sociable creatures, so one must engage with others meaningfully. Volunteer or join a social group or take group classes. Stay in touch with family and friends.
