From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

Although I would never want to claim that a whole plant-based diet can cure everything, it’s surprising how amazingly it does work! And it’s no wonder, given that it’s close to what nature intended for us to eat. But there is another reason why we all should be quick to change and that is new pandemics.

You see, pandemics always spread where there is a population density of the affected species. We saw this in the Covid pandemic and now in India, across at least 15 states, we are seeing the huge spread of lumpy skin disease in cows. This too is a viral infection that is currently limited to cows but no one knows how it can spread. Lakhs have been affected; thousands of cattle have died. And we’ve had other epidemics in the recent past too – bird flu, swine flu, and foot-and-mouth disease to name a few.

And in end-September, there was an outbreak of ANE (acute necrotising encephalitis) in Kanpur. The outbreak started in the GSVM Medical college campus soon after 20 pigs were found dead. 30 medical students and others were affected.

While all this may not be avoidable, it’s up to us to face the world with our best foot forward. Sometimes we wake up and are willing to make changes but it’s just too late. Let’s not delay another moment. The consequences of neglecting health are too great now.

It’s fun & inspiring to meet new people and try delicious plant-based food together. So all of you in Mumbai, Pune & Ahmedabad, get set to join our upcoming potluck parties! And do let others in these cities know too! Click here for details.

Dr Nandita shares how you can create a great impact on the planet by doing just two things.

Nut-free cheese

Consuming dairy is affecting the planet in a big way. When we can enjoy recipes by using alternatives for dairy then why cause any harm to the cows, our health and the planet? Try this super easy, healthy and yummy nut-free cheese, filled with the goodness of vegetables. It can be used as a dip or a salad dressing too.

Is damaging our health and the planet for our taste buds worth it?

A plant-based lifestyle is the only solution if we as a species are to avoid extinction in the near future for the following reasons

1. Eating as nature intended

Eating as close to what nature intended for us will keep us at our highest health potential. Lifestyle diseases like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer can become a thing of the past.

2. Animal agriculture can result in pandemics

Raising animals for food can cause pandemics to spread as we have seen in the recent past.

3. Climate change and global warming

The biggest cause of climate change is what we put on our plates. Yes, livestock create more greenhouse gases than all the vehicles on our planet combined! We are seeing the huge effects of moderate climate change already in the form of droughts, floods, hurricanes and tsunamis. Are we waiting for more severe effects before we take it seriously?

4. Air pollution

Forests are being decimated to raise 80 billion land animals annually to feed humans. This has destroyed the earth’s fresh air reserves.

5. Food shortages

Already food shortages are being noticed globally while inflation and rising prices are making the situation worse.

6. Rising temperatures

These are causing the heating of the oceans. If the polar ice caps melt, we may see coastal lands sinking soon.

7. Our duty towards others

What we put on our plates has consequences for every single living being on the planet. It’s our duty towards everyone else on the planet to eat responsibly.

8. Veganism is the greatest social justice movement

Every being deserves to live freely, in peace, with access to food and water. Join the movement – don’t get left behind.
