From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

It was indeed a very pleasant surprise and honour to receive the Nari Shakti Puraskar 2016. This award was given to 33 women on the occasion of International Women’s Day, 8th March for pioneering and excelling, mostly in unconventional fields. All the women were strong, passionate and inspiring, and it was a great pleasure to interact with them. Besides the ceremony with the Honourable President of India, we had a meeting and dinner with Smt Maneka Gandhi, Minister of Women and Child Development and tea with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence. I think all of us left with the resolution to work even harder and reach even more people than ever before.

When I founded SHARAN in 2005, I was all alone and perhaps one of a handful of people in India who was vegan or even knew what that was, but how this has changed! We now have vegan groups in almost every city and vegan products in most supermarkets. But a lot of work remains. Veganism is far from mainstream in India.

Today SHARAN has a team of 36 dedicated people and we are growing. We have touched the lives of nearly 50,000 people through our events and reversed diseases in an estimated 10,000. But this is not enough. India has the largest population of diabetics in the world. SHARAN’s vision is a diabetes free India. Not only diabetes but a host of other lifestyle diseases can be reversed or prevented with the whole plant based diet that we prescribe. We can actually live a life without medicines. And we need you to partner with us!

We know that once you experience results, you will automatically wish to spread the word about the goodness of the whole plant based diet. Many of you have already done so. We are so grateful for this. However if you would like to do more, then read on…

Today SHARAN has spread its wings in India and abroad. We have worked in Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Kochi, Trivandrum and more. We have also worked in Nairobi, Dubai and London as well as other cities in Europe. We have conducted a number of training programs for doctors and nutritionists and cooking instructors. We are proud that many of our trainees have started their own organisations and have reached many people directly.

We are walking a path that requires both passion and dedication. Changing mindsets and habits is no mean task. But it’s needed today more than ever when people are dying of lifestyle diseases that need never exist! Today water shortages, climate change, food shortages are big problems that can be solved just by changing mindsets. The problems in the human realm are so large that most people ignore the holocaust that animals are facing. But how long can we be deaf to the cries of our fellow beings?

In order to grow we need more people at all levels, from administrative and planning to training and executing. We need people who are compassionate and passionate and are willing to be the change that they wish to see in this world. We need people who can think beyond their personal needs to the needs of the planet and everyone on it. Why am I a part of SHARAN?

SHARAN consists of a team of people who are interested in being part of a change. This issue, our Mumbai head Reyna K Rupani shares with you about why she is a part of SHARAN…

I have always stayed away from medications. Dr Nandita showed me the way to ensure that I stay away from them throughout my life. However once I made the change, experienced the immense benefits, I suddenly made the connection – the whole plant based diet is amazing not only for our health, but for the animals and the environment too. I started seeing animals in a very different light. I could sense their innocence and how they had feelings. They are sentient beings, and we have absolutely no right to interfere in their lives at all. I started understanding their plight. And after that one can’t help but speak for them.

SHARAN gave me the platform to speak for them. It works so systematically and beautifully. I am a teacher too, and what better education to give than bringing in awareness towards health empowerment, animal liberation and environmental sustainability. Also being a student of the Vedanta philosophy we are taught that we need to give back, for we have received so much from Nature. SHARAN for me is a way to give back. There is a lot of freedom and flexibility given by Dr Nandita. She is always open to ideas, patient when we disagree with her, as she wants us to learn from our own mistakes! Personally I have grown in a myriad of ways by working with SHARAN. There is a meaning and direction to life. Totally indebted and in gratitude to Dr Nandita and each and every team member at SHARAN. No one can do it alone. It’s a co-operative endeavour and we all recognise that. Each one is special and unique in their own way. For all of us, SHARAN is not just another job….it’s a Movement.

SHARAN conducts a variety of programs to kickstart your health. How do you know what to go for? How do you know what is applicable for you? Read on

6. If you want to reverse diseases and see the results on the spot come to our 21 day Health Holiday. You will learn all of the above and with repeated lab reports and checks you will be able to reduce medications and see amazing results and more. We have lots of optional activities –  yoga, meditation, nature walks, sports, massages, art therapy, swimming and more to help you reconnect with yourself and cooking classes to make sure you can do it once you are back.

7. We are soon launching an online 21-day diabetes reversal program which will be effective if coupled with our consultations. This is specially for people who are in cities where we do not operate. These people can learn how to be free in the comfort of their own homes with the help of the internet.
