From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

Because our lives have become so automated, exercise has become more essential than ever before. We can now get our food from a store or restaurant, the only exercise we need to do is open our purse and pay. We travel in cars, buses or trains and we don’t even need to climb stairs because of lifts and escalators. Lifting water is not a problem anymore because of pipes and taps. Even a fire does not need to be made or wood carried on our shoulders thanks to the gas burners we have in our kitchens. Our computers and mobile phones do another whole set of tasks. Washing machines, dish washers and blenders accomplish the rest leaving us with plenty of time to sit in front of the TV instead of experiencing the real world or even flexing our brains.

All this is good but not only are we getting more lazy, obese and sick, we are also becoming stressed and depressed. Automation does not make us happy.

When you move, dance, run and play, your body produces seratonin that makes you happy. When you are out in the sun or in nature, more seratonin is produced. You can feel it! Yet, we pay for gyms and exercise on more machines!

No animal in nature needs to be told to exercise because just living requires exercise. We must take a step back into nature if we are looking to heal, and heal well.

Get Going

Everyone knows the importance and benefits of exercise. However, how many actually get down to doing it? And, if we do gather the motivation, we either indulge in spurts or overdo it mindlessly. We are barely able to strike a right balance. Any activity becomes easy when you incorporate one element – love! When you start to love doing exercise, your body itself will push you to move. Acquiring that state of love requires intent and initial effort. Once you fall in love with exercise, you instantly experience a surge in health, energy and happiness. You feel liberated from within. Start now, and feel the difference!

Read on for some tried and tested tips to help you reach the state of 'exercise love'…

1. Educate the Mind

Take time to read about the health benefits of exercise or even the ill-effects of not exercising. The more you expose your mind to such information, you will sense a subconscious shift within.

2. Go on a plant based diet

This diet gives you so much energy that automatically you become active. After all, you need to consume all that energy somewhere!

3. Homework

Yes, working around the house is a great form of exercise. That's why our helpers are so fit! Simple things like ensuring you open the door when the bell rings, fetch the water from the kitchen, take up the duty of setting up the table, throw the garbage outside – every small activity can make a difference. Of course, reducing house helpers will go a long way too!

4. Join a group

Dance, sport, yoga, jog, swim – whatever it is that you like, join a group or a class or find a partner. That's instant motivation for you and, of course, when you pay up the fee, that pushes you too.

5. Don't miss a session

Do you skip brushing your teeth or having a meal after a late night out or a full on party? Why is it easy then to skip a workout session? Make exercise a must-do in your daily routine, the pay offs are worth every effort!

6. Be Mindful

Don't miss the opportunity to move – take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator, park further away, carry your own shopping bags, stand up every hour for 10 minutes (you can keep an alarm for this), keep the remote controls and mobiles away, play with your kids!

7. Eat well

The more we indulge in cooked food, the more lazy we become. Increase the raw intake in your diet and witness the spike in your energy levels.

8. Set a goal

Buy a dress or a jeans smaller than your size and set a goal to fit into it! Sleeping early also helps a great deal.

9. Announce

Share your exercise routine aloud with family, friends, neighbours. They will help you stay on track.

10. Watch sports based films

You will realize how discipline, determination and early mornings will lead you to success.
