From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

26th Nov is National Milk Day

Like almost all Indians, I grew up thinking that milk is the perfect food for humans, especially for vegetarians like me because of its high protein and calcium content. After becoming a doctor I even recommended it to my patients! It took me some time to recognise that we have all been ‘whitewashed’ by the dairy industry as part of its aggressive marketing strategy.

I now realise that the best food for every species is what nature has designed for it. Every species (except human beings) eats by instinct. Every mammal mother produces milk only for her young, and no animal drinks the milk of another animal. It continues to amaze me that every child knows this instinctively in how they love their mother's milk but need coaxing to drink cow’s milk with sugar, cocoa or other additives. Primarily because cow’s milk is not designed for humans!

Now more and more people know that dairy is not the elixir that it was once thought to be. Dairy milk is directly linked to too many diseases. As if that isn’t enough of a good reason, milk is also one of the leading causes of climate change. The world over, diary is being replaced with plant based milks so people can continue to have the white fluids they have been conditioned to consume and yet not get sick because of it.

I think that the National Milk Day should be renamed as the National Milk Re-education Day, and the day be used to educate Indians about the health hazards of a diet with dairy. As part of our commitment to this cause, SHARAN is launching a weeklong FREE email programme starting 27 November to give you information and recipes for dairy alternatives daily. Join by registering here and share our initiative with your friends too.

Celebrity Speak

Rohan Hingorani – As a child I used to be bothered by multiple forms of allergies including asthma, hay fever, eczema and conjunctivitis. It often came in the way of my daily activities. Like every teenager I wanted to look good and participate in every activity possible but the allergies continued bothering me. I didn’t give up though. I took fairly strong medication and went headlong with these activities. At the back of my mind, I knew this wasn’t a sustainable solution.

I started reading up about natural ways to heal the body. In every article that I read, eating a plant based diet was always mentioned. Apart from its benefits on health, it also made complete sense to me for its enduring benefits on the environment and animal protection. In 2013, I took a conscious decision to embrace a plant based diet. It was a process, took time and a lot of effort. That didn’t deter me because I was clear about making the transition.

It has been a good five years now and I realise that not only did the diet/lifestyle help me feel better, it has also given me a sense of purpose that every single one of us out there could live a better and more fulfilling life through functional nutrition. So, now, I have taken it upon myself as a mission to advocate the approach to increase awareness and eventually transform people’s lives for the better!

Rohan Hingorani can be currently seen on Splitsvilla 11. He has earlier participated in MTV Roadies Xtreme, 2018. He can be followed on rohanhingorani.com

Mumbai-ites have the opportunity to personally meet Rohan Hingorani at two SHARAN collaborative events: One Earth Festival where he will be speaking on main stage at 7.30 pm & at a film screening, The End of Meat.

Almond Milk

Once we stop having our mother's milk, we really don't need milk at all. However, given our conditioning over the years, our minds find it hard to accept a diet sans milk. So, let’s try some alternatives that can more than meet your craving. Try this delicious almond milk recipe for instance, you will love it!

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup whole almonds, soaked in water overnight

  • 2 cups fresh water

  • 2-3 seedless dates

Method:

After the almonds have soaked overnight, drain and discard the water. If desired, these almonds can be peeled. In a blender, churn the soaked almonds to form a smooth paste adding a little water if needed. Add the dates and blend again with some more water.

Strain the mixture to remove almond particles if any. Add more water, if needed, to get the desired consistency.

Once prepared, the milk should be refrigerated and can be stored for up to four days.

Dairy Disease

Milk causes a number of diseases, and just replacing dairy in your diet with plant-based alternatives is the ideal way to enjoy the foods that you have grown up with, without suffering from the dangers of dairy. If you have not given up dairy yet, why not try it for the next 30 days and experience for yourself its healing powers?

To find out more about a few conditions you may prevent and reverse by eliminating dairy, read on.

1. Colds, coughs and sinus

Both Ayurveda and naturopathy recognise milk as mucus forming. Almost everyone who stops consuming dairy will see, after an initial cleansing reaction, that colds, coughs and sinus problems disappear or become less frequent.

2. Acne

Acne is linked to puberty when hormones are changing. But dairy is both full of hormones and fat and therefore promotes acne. Most people notice that their skin becomes soft, clear and even glows after stopping dairy.

3. Premature puberty & women’s issues

The increase in consumption of dairy has led to an consequential rise of this problem. Diary is laden with growth hormones, and oxytocin. PCOD, menstrual problems and menopausal problems are all linked to dairy intake.

4. Diabetes

Dairy is one of the biggest causes of type 2 diabetes and is closely linked to type 1 diabetes as well. Dairy contains fat without fibre, hormones, IGF, all of which promote high blood sugar. Thousands of our clients have replaced dairy with fruit and experienced a significant drop in their blood sugars!

5. Breast and Prostate Cancer

These are amongst the most common cancers seen today, and they are hormone-dependent. Dairy is full of hormones. The growth in dairy consumption has seen a rise in incidence of both these cancers.

6. Colon Cancer

All animal products including dairy lack fibre. Fibre cleanses the intestines and is necessary for easy bowel movement. Lack of fibre causes constipation and the absorption of toxins causing colon cancers.

7. Acidity

High protein foods cause excess acid secretion in the stomach leading to acidity. Contrary to popular belief, stopping dairy actually helps reverse acidity and ulcers. The conventional home remedy, cold milk, may neutralise the acid temporarily but ends up maintaining the cycle of acidity.

8. Obesity

Milk is the food for a baby calf to grow into its full size in just 18 months. It's replete with growth hormones. One of the biggest causes of the obesity epidemic so prevalent today is the consumption of dairy in concentrated forms, such as cheese, paneer and sweets.

9. Asthma and allergies

Stop dairy and other high proteins and watch allergies gradually disappear in months!

10. Constipation

Dairy with its lack of fibre can cause severe constipation. This can be reversed with a high fibre plant-based diet.

11. Depression and Anxiety

In order to produce dairy, cows are made repeatedly made pregnant and their babies taken away from them. They are often kept confined in extremely stressful conditions. This causes adrenaline secretion, which ultimately ends up in our bodies and fill us with stress and anxiety too.
