From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

How does one make a New Year’s Resolution? Most of us have no idea what we want. I mean we all want to look good, be healthy, achieve more at work, be less stressed, etc, etc, but what do you REALLY want? That's what we have no idea about, and part of the reason is that we ‘want’ what society wants us to want or has taught us is good. We are conditioned by our schooling, our culture and our society to want certain things – a good house, a good job, a great spouse… What we all really need is different. Wanting what you don’t need only makes you unhappy. We are all born with a spiritual purpose that is forgotten due to the worldly expectations thrust upon us. But no matter how much we strive to achieve the worldly expectations we will always be unhappy just because there is always someone who has more or is better.

So what can we do? This year let’s step out of the rat race and actually get in touch with that unique spiritual purpose. Follow our hearts instead of social expectations. This year make the resolution to connect to yourself,  find yourself, be yourself and dare to be different. Let this year be the year of complete awareness, truth and integrity.

Coconut Chia Pudding

Start the New Year on a sweet and healthy note with this easy-peasy and delicious pudding recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups coconut milk or cashew milk

  • 2 tbsp chia seeds

  • 2 tbsp desiccated coconut (optional)

  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

  • sweetener as desired – chopped soaked dried fruit, date paste.

Method:

Grind the chia seeds in a coffee grinder. Heat the coconut milk and then add in the chia seeds and other ingredients except the dried fruit if you are using it. Stir till it thickens as the chia seeds swell. If you are using soaked dried fruit as the sweetener, then add in the end and serve. (For example soaked dried mango will produce a wonderful coconut mango pudding.) Serve warm.

Variation

If you prefer to eat the pudding cold, add all the ingredients and let the pudding thicken by itself. No cooking is required – you have a wonderful raw pudding if you use dried fruits as a sweetener.

For Serving

You can assemble the pudding with fresh fruit of choice like strawberries and mango

Already Broken your Resolutions?

‘It is EASY to change’- if that is your thought process, then yes, it will be easy to transform.

‘Change is tough’ – well then yes, it’s going to be difficult!

It’s our own mindset that prevents us from keeping our resolutions, and it's our own mindset again which will help keep them! It doesn't matter if you fail, keep re-iterating to yourself that change is pretty easy, and it will happen!

Check out some more tips which will help you stay on track.

1. Start with one resolution

Keep it simple. Focus on one aspect and once that becomes a routine, start working on another one. No one said that resolutions are to be made only in the New Year!

2. Understand WHY

Educate yourself on the importance of making the change you have set out to do. Read on the same, discuss it with someone who is doing it or join a relevant workshop. This way you are educating yourself to further understand the reason behind your decision.

3. Announce your resolutions

Tell as many people as possible about your resolutions. The more you say it, the more you are committing to yourself and them! This will remind you again and again and they, too, will then support you to stay on track.

4. Be precise

Numbers make things accurate. If it's exercise, commit on how much you will do everyday. If it's a book, set the numbers you will read in a month. If it's eating healthy then be specific, for example, you may want to commit to eating a salad everyday.

5. Get into action-mode

Seriously plan how to meet your target. So if it's having a salad each day, source the recipes for a month and you are good to go! If its 30 minute exercise, make a 30 day chart and follow that up every month.

6. Forget about the end-result

Simply focus on achieving your day to day target. The end result will automatically come. Make a chart and add a tick everyday once the task is completed. It really feels good!

7. Reward yourself

Though the completion of the daily task is a reward in itself, but an external reward keeps one motivated. So treat yourself to something special after completing a month of regularly fulfilling the tasks.
