From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

It is said that 2019 is the year of veganism. It's got to be true. The word is out – veganism is marking its presence everywhere with a growing number of success stories in the media, new food products hitting the market, celebrities sharing their vegan journeys, meat and dairy companies switching to plant-based alternatives, restaurants featuring vegan dishes on their menu, plant-based restaurants sprouting everywhere, and millionaires investing in vegan businesses. What a positive note to start the year on!

While this is encouraging news, it remains a reality that there are still a significant number out there yet to embrace veganism. Not surprising then that so many people in their 50’s and under are suffering from lifestyle diseases and occupying hospital beds. What’s alarming is the fact that these diseases are setting in at very early ages.

Do yourself a favour. At the risk of causing yourself some discomfort, make the change. Let go all your long held perceptions, rise above the conventional behavioural patterns that we have been told are good for us. Use the information out there, join the Veganuary trend that is hitting an all-time high, and become a new person.

Veganism is not about deprivation, it is not about denying yourself anything. It is not time or money intensive. Neither is it undoable. It is about doing what is best for the environment, animals, and, if done correctly, for your health too. As an added bonus, save on food, medicines and hospital bills, and savour the thought that you are living your values. Time you wore the vegan badge with honour and responsibility.

The word 'cancer' scared me to hell

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOqByLrBiig

Three years ago 36 year old fashion designer Shruti Sethi was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer. Shruti decided to change her diet, which was totally against what her oncologist prescribed. Now she calls herself a 'Cancer Thriver' and wishes to spread awareness about the importance of the whole plant based diet.

Creamy Chickpea and Vegetable Soup

Uncomfortable? Congrats, you are on track!

One of the biggest secrets to success is discomfort. The difference between the ordinary and the extra-ordinary is that the latter embraced discomfort. For a butterfly to bloom, it has to undergo the struggle as a caterpillar.

So whatever your goal may be, welcome discomfort with a smile. It is this very process that brings with it the satisfaction of achievement. A truly happy person actually invites discomfort with the knowledge that success is guaranteed!

Find out how you can too…

1. Sleep on the floor

Start with one day a month if you like, but do give this a shot!

2. Wake up earlier

According to scriptures, the ideal time to wake up is between 4 am to 6 am, when we are at our best. Whatever time you may be waking up now, try and put your body clock to half an hour earlier.

Tip: Keep the alarm away from your bedside!

3. Let breakfast be raw

When they say eat breakfast like a king, it only means eating the highest quality of food for optimum nourishment. Organic fruits and salads are the richest in nutrition. Start with a big glass of green smoothie. If you feel hungry again, have fruits.

4. Start lunch or dinner with a salad

Since we are all connected, our digestion is best when the sun is at its peak – noon. So have your lunch starting with a lovely bowl of salad. This will automatically reduce your intake of cooked food. Similarly, try and finish dinner before sunset and feel the change!

5. Set a physical target for yourself

Resolve to do 50 surya-namaskars a day or 100 push ups a day or 200 star jumps a day. You don’t have to accomplish all of this at one time! Spread the target across the day and do so whenever you get the time.

6. Challenge yourself

Take a cold shower on a cold day. Do an activity that you are not comfortable doing. Get into reading. Call up someone you have a problem with and share your thoughts with them…whatever it may be, challenge yourself. Get out of the comfort zone.

7. Work on your addictions

Having tea/coffee, being lazy, getting hooked to junk food, spending too much time on social media, smoking, alcohol – are all addictions. Consciously through education and analysis, start working on these.

8. Do something new everyday

Routines are great, but there can be something new done within the routine. Take a different route to work. Join an interesting class. Opt to walk instead of drive to run an errand. Write a letter to someone. Rack your brain in a crossword.
