From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

In these rather difficult times the world over, it can be hard to stay positive. But it’s also a test. As a doctor and a person who cares for all animals, both human and non human, it’s easy for me to see how lucky I am. There is so much to be grateful for.

I am in Turkey now. Amongst its many beautiful offerings, what has stood out for me is the Turkish people’s love for animals. Cats and dogs are fed on the streets, and people enjoy being with them. Even hotels allow them in. But I also sense a huge disconnect when I see them hugely indulging in animal food as part of their daily diet. This dichotomy is a reality worldwide. Our cultural conditioning is so strong that we miss seeing the reality sometimes.

It’s time to look at everything closely and check for our own conditioning, while also facing whatever comes our way with equanimity and a positive attitude. When we live an inspired  and energised life in accordance with our values, and according to nature’s laws, we are naturally both healthy and joyous. Live life connected!

Experiencing Miracles with Affirmations!

SHARAN’s 21-Day Health Retreat is a holistic programme that focuses on food, exercise and the effect of our thoughts on our well-being. Our amazing facilitator for the retreat, Tehseen Mehdi Dudani, walks the talk and shares how affirmations have proved magical for her and others too!

I strongly believe in the power of affirmations as I have experienced miracles with regard to my health since 2012 when I went through a major surgery for a condition that was suspected to be cancerous. I was worried sick. The night before, I surprisingly calmed myself down and harnessed the power of affirmations by writing in a book with complete belief exactly how well the operation would go and how I would not be diagnosed with cancer or have the need to undergo chemotherapy/complications. Sure enough, when I regained consciousness a day later after a gruelling eight hour operation, a senior doctor told me: “I wanted to personally give you the good news because this is nothing short of a miracle. You will not need any chemotherapy and you will be absolutely fine.” I still remember how I cried tears of joy on hearing this and thanked the universe for its blessings. I knew in my heart that my affirmations had worked their magic. Since then I have used positive affirmations many a time, sometimes repeating lines several times a day, such as “Every cell in my body has healed”, “I am strong and healthy”, “I love and accept myself just the way I am” and “Everyday in every way I am getting better and better”.

As a facilitator at the 21-day programme, I conducted a detailed session on the mind-body connection. Many of the participants understood and implemented their affirmations for better health and in other areas of their life through visualisations, daily repetitions. In just a few days during the retreat itself, some came and told me how it had miraculously worked for them much to their surprise. For one, a problem area that had drawn out for five long years got resolved within the next two days when she received a confirmation call. Another participant at the retreat found to her utmost surprise that she could walk no less than five kms effortlessly during our weekly trek to the nearby village despite suffering from arthritis for the past 10 years and barely able to walk in her daily routine. I also had someone who was very sceptical in the session about using affirmations and frankly didn't believe it would work. After trying it for a few days, he informed our group about how on using it to test if it worked, it actually did work for him. Yet another lady was being plagued by mosquito bites for almost a week during the retreat. She used affirmations and reported how within a day none of the mosquitoes came anywhere close to her. She happily declared herself mosquito-bite free.

Each of us has the power to heal ourselves or make things happen. We just have to trust ourselves and make an affirmation and leave the rest to the universe to play out our wishes!

Creamy Summer Smoothie

Summer is here, so naturally it is warm. Let's accept nature and understand that whatever she does is for our good. Let’s take this opportunity to affirm that we are cool and indulge in this delicious summer milkshake!

Ingredients

  • 4 bananas (200 gm banana ice‐cream)
  • 4 mangoes (400 gm pulp)
  • freshly ground green cardamom seeds (choti elaichi)
  • 1 thin slice of fresh ginger
  • 2‐4 tsp freshly squeezed lime juice
  • a sprig of mint for garnish (optional)

Method

Chop the bananas and store in an airtight container in the freezer for 2 days. Keep the mango in the fridge to get a very cool and refreshing milkshake. Affirm Yourself to Good Health

Health is not only what you eat or do, it's also what you think. And this has been scientifically proven. Try and reflect – when you are positive, your body feels good, your mood is upbeat and life seems worth living. When you are negative, the body either aches or feels tired, you feel low and life seems a challenge. All you need to do is change the thought to feel the difference.

Our mind has a tendency to gravitate towards lower energy thoughts. We need to put in some effort to pull it up until we reach a state where positive thinking becomes second nature. Affirmations are the tools that you can use to keep pulling your mind up. They are basically positive sentences, which inspire, energise or motivate. They subconsciously bring up mental images, and repeating them regularly gradually turns them into reality.

For instance, if you need to shed some weight you can keep affirming to yourself, "I weigh 60 kilos". Initially it may seem a routine but if done with complete belief, gradually your mind will start believing it and will automatically lead you to choices that will help you get there. Yes, it is as simple as that, but nothing comes without an effort.

1. Always use Positive Statements

Instead of saying 'I am not going to eat junk food', state 'I eat healthy food’.

2. Be Specific

Like everyone, the universe also understands only what you state. So be specific about what you want and give it a timeline, so the universe knows what it is that you want and by when.

3. In the Present Tense

Make your affirmation in the present tense as that's what you want your reality to be. Stating 'I will be healthy' is saying that it will only happen in the future. Instead affirm – 'I am healthy'.

4. Keep it Short and Simple

This makes it easy for both you and the universe to remember!

5. Schedule in a Time Slot

Figure out when in your daily routine it is that you want to affirm.  This allows you to weave the rhythm into your schedule and you will remember to do it every day. The early morning hours or just before sleeping are the best times for this.

6. Write your Affirmations

Have a special notebook for this, where you can jot down your affirmations. If there is one that you wish to be done quickly, then write it 25, 50 or even hundred times on a daily basis.

7. Change your Password

Either the phone, computer or email password can be made into a simple affirmation like – 'iamhappy' 'iamconfident' 'iamhealthy' 'iamrich'.

8. Mobile Screenshot

This could be your affirmation, so that whenever you look at your mobile, you are reminded of what you seek and can repeat it in your mind.

9. Use for Self-Improvisation

Affirmations are best used as tools to make you a better person. If you do that, you will receive all the things you need! So instead of only affirming for material things, why not affirm for your own evolution too?

10. Have Belief

Only if you believe in it, will it work. Like they say, "Faith can indeed move mountains". If you don't believe in it sincerely, regardless of how much you try, it won't work. So have faith and give it a shot. You honestly have nothing to lose.
