From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

November 14 is World Diabetes Day. The reason diabetes has its own day is because it is emerging as one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in the world.

In our belief that every person can be free of diabetes with just a little knowledge and willingness to commit to that knowledge, we at SHARAN envisage a day when November 14 could be renamed as World Diabetes-free Day. This comes out of our vision to create a diabetes-free India and world.

Diabetes has so many complications – the most annoying of these are neuropathy and erectile dysfunction. But other conditions like heart disease, loss of vision, amputations, and chronic kidney disease are seriously debilitating. The good news is that all of these can be completely avoided with simple lifestyle changes. The time to make that shift is right now with so many vegan friendly products coming into the market.

SHARAN holds your hand as you prepare to embrace the change through our complimentary talks, 21-day online diabetes reversal programme and our much sought after 21-day health retreats. We also offer consultancy over phone, Skype and in person. SHARAN periodically hosts seminars and supported programmes on reversing diabetes and hypertension, as well as cooking classes on ways to cook delicious food using whole plant-based techniques. My book ‘Reversing Diabetes in 21 Days’ is a valuable resource. SHARAN can help people with both type 1 and 2 diabetes.

Diabetes can be reversed

If you want to get rid of any problem, you need to understand the cause of that problem and remove it. The reason that cutting out sugar or carbohydrates does not resolve diabetes is because sugar or carbohydrates are not the cause of diabetes. High blood sugar is the result of diabetes. The cause of diabetes is lack of insulin or insulin resistance. And the causes of insulin resistance are as follows –

1. Diabetes is a hormonal problem

It is linked to other hormonal problems such as hypothyroid, PCOD, infertility, or vitamin D imbalance. When one hormone goes out of balance, the others can be affected.

2. Foods

All animal products are likely to be high in hormones. Non-organic plant foods may contain hormones too, while hormonal medications like steroids could contribute as well.

3.  Fat

Fat stored inside the muscles cells causes insulin resistance. Therefore, we must reduce all fats without fibre – oil, ghee, butter, and animal products including dairy and eggs – as they too are full of fat.

4.  Lack of fibre

Only plants have fibre although refined and processed plant foods also lack fibre. Fibre holds on to fat and flushes it out of the body

5.  Chemicals

These are hormone disruptors – medications, personal care products (soaps, shampoos, hair dyes, deodorants, toothpaste, hand sanitisers, perfumes, makeup etc), home care products (incense, air fresheners, detergents, pest control, phenyl etc), non-organic fruits and vegetables and other foods, readymade products, plastics, artificial sweeteners all have chemicals that can impact your condition.

6. Dairy

Dairy and its derivatives contain fat, no fibre, hormones, chemicals (pesticides, PCBs, urea, antibiotics, adulterants) and is therefore the leading cause of diabetes. Dairy is also packed with hormones.

7. Stress

This is often the precipitating cause of diabetes. Check your levels each time you are stressed or sick – you will be surprised to see how blood sugar shoots up.

8.  Lack of exercise

Exercise helps reduce stress by increasing serotonin and endorphins. It also helps to burn fat. Choose a form of exercise that you truly enjoy.

9.  Lack of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a hormone and unfortunately almost everyone in urban areas suffers from a lack of it. It is important to regularly check the levels of this hormone, and supplement if necessary.

10.  Beverages

Tea, coffee, colas, alcohol, smoking raise blood sugar levels and should be completely avoided.
